Yesterday I had to take one of my dogs, Cara, to the vet. We've been concerned about her, and she is my 'baby' so I wanted to be sure that it was nothing serious.
As we arrived at the vet, my sweet girl began what we call her 'monkey girl' routine! I think it's a nervous thing and her way of vocalizing that she's scared. It continued as the vet examined her and Cara continued to pace, make her money noises and paw at me to pick her up.
well, the good news is that it's nothing serious. And then of course there's the fact that it made me think about recovery. Cara's vocalizing and pawing at me to pick her up was her way of letting me know she needed me to support her. She knew that if she was in my arms, then everything was safe and no harm would come to her.
In recovery, something that gives us that same sense of support is having a strong support network. When we get scared, overwhelmed, nervous, or want to celebrate the victories, those 'safe' people are the ones we turn to that give us security to keep going.
Who's on your team? Do you have people to turn to when fear tries to sneak in?
Maybe it's time to take a risk and add some folks, or make a phone call …. go on, I DARE you!!
